Diversity and Outreach

To attract and retain diverse, top-tier talent, UCSF Medical Center is deeply committed to diversity and outreach

Diversity and Outreach are the cornerstones of the framework that support our teams, health care strategies, philosophies, mission and vision – which when combined, create a welcoming and inclusive environment for employees and patients. But at UCSF Medical Center, we don’t stop at just diversity and outreach. To continue our commitment to patient-centered and culturally responsive care, as well as the highest quality of health care that our patients have come to count on and expect from us, it is vital to promote an environment where cultural sensitivity is held in high regard.

Individuals from all backgrounds are encouraged to contribute their best work and to leverage their differences in order to deliver exceptional patient care and cultivate an inclusive and equitable workplace. We seek candidates whose skills, and personal and professional experience, have prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and excellence, and the community we serve. Here, diversity is a way of life, and we live by our Principles of Community.

UCSF Medical Center is proud of the recently established Office of Diversity and Outreach. Led by the Vice Chancellor of Diversity and Outreach, the Office serves as the campus leader in charge of building diversity in all aspects of our mission. This is accomplished through ongoing assessments, development of new programs and building consensus. Together, the Medical Center, the hospital teaching sites and the campus collaborate to promote diversity, equity and inclusion across all groups.

The mission of the Office encompasses many facets:

•   To build a broadly diverse faculty, student, trainee and staff community
•   To nurture a culture that is welcoming and supportive
•   To engage diverse ideas for the provision of culturally competent education, discovery and patient care

The Vice Chancellor’s priority is to develop and execute a comprehensive strategic plan for diversity and outreach that supports the mission of UCSF Medical Center in its advancement of health worldwide and the recruitment and retention of talented employees and students who contribute to our commitment to diversity and excellence.

The goal of the Office is to provide outstanding and culturally competent resources and services. Affirmative Action and Equal Opportunity, Center for LGBT Health & Equity, Sexual Harassment, Prevention and Resolution, University Community Partnerships and the Multicultural Resource Center comprise the Office. These centralized services bolster and foster collaboration, improve effectiveness and serve as a cornerstone for cultural transformation.

In addition, the Office serves as a central resource on campus where internal and external community members can easily find news and updates about activities and programs taking place and can learn how to get involved. The Office presents educational and culturally enriching events that take place at UCSF throughout the year, with key programs hosted through the Multicultural Resource Center. Established in 2012, it serves as a resource for students, trainees, faculty and staff, with a focus on underrepresented minorities, mentoring and inter-professional collaboration.
