RN Training Programs

As a premier academic medical center, UCSF Medical Center and UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital San Francisco are dedicated to supporting new nurses who are entering practice as well as experienced nurses who are changing specialty areas.

A variety of teaching methods are used to enhance the learning experience including didactic instruction, group discussions, skills laboratories, simulation, precepted clinical experiences, competency-based orientation, and online learning. Please search our careers page to see if positions are currently posted.

In conjunction with participating units, The Institute for Nursing Excellence (INEx), and HR, UCSF provides several training programs to facilitate Nursing professional development. Program types may include:

Career Development Training Program (CDTP): The CDTP is designed to facilitate professional growth and new career opportunities for UCSF Medical Center registered nurses who desire to transition from their current practice area to another practice area. Our overall goal is to provide a structure that will support our internal UCSF nurses and provide them with additional career mobility. The next CDTP application period will be late winter/spring 2021/2022.

External Experienced Training Program (EETP): The EETP is designed to facilitate professional growth and new career opportunities for external experienced registered nurses who desire to transition into UCSF Medical Center to work in a new practice area for which they lack the hiring qualifications for that practice area without the support of this training program. Our overall goal is to provide a structure that will support our external experienced nurses and provide them with additional career mobility. The next EETP application period will be late winter/spring 2021/2022.

New Nurse (RN) Residency Training Program (NNRTP): The NNRTP is designed for newly graduated RNs to safely and successfully launch their nursing careers at UCSF Medical Center. The NNRTP is comprised of two phases. Phase I is a rigorous schedule that features didactic instruction interspersed with clinical precepted time. Phase II builds off of Phase I and features monthly educational programming and simulation experiences to continue the NNRTP participants' professional development and clinical judgment. Our overall goal is to provide a structured series of learning experiences coupled with precepted time to support the transition of newly graduated nurses into the Advanced Beginner stage of skill acquisition as they begin their careers at UCSF Medical Center.

The next New Nurse Residency (RN) Training Program (NNRT) will begin June 2021. We will update our site in the future with posting dates when applications will be accepted.

We recommend that you access our career website, jobs.ucsfmedicalcenter.org and create an account and a search with "New Nurse (RN) Residency Training Program" as your key words. You may save this search so that when we open the program positions on the website, you will receive a direct notification and will then be able to apply. The search you create will remain active for six months.

Re-Entry Training Program (RETP): The RETP is designed for experienced registered nurses who are transitioning into a practice area and who lack the current clinical experience necessary or knowledge and skills of the new practice area to which they are transitioning without the support of this training program.

The RETP is comprised of a rigorous schedule that features didactic instruction interspersed with clinical precepted time. Our overall goal is to provide a structured series of learning experiences coupled with precepted time to support the transition of experienced registered nurses as they re-launch their careers at UCSF Medical Center. The next RETP application period will be Spring 2022.
